Hull Junior Grand Prix

Held at the Endsleigh Centre, Beverley Road, Hull

13th December 2009.

REPORT
The second annual Hull Junior Chess Grand Prix took place at the Endsleigh Centre on Beverley Road on Sunday 13th December and as well as including  youngsters from many parts of Yorkshire there were also a good number from Lincolnshire. It is very encouraging to see children wanting to take part in chess tournaments like this and even more so
that parents are willing bring them, especially so considering some of the distances that will have been involved. I must therefore offer my grateful thanks to the parents and children who helped to make this tournament possible. Now to the  details, the tournament was split into three sections ie The Major,  Intermediate,  & Novice with the placements of the players attached.   As you will see all sections were keenly contested with only one point separating the first four in the Major, the same margin being the difference between the top six in the Intermediate and even the Novice only had two points between the top five. James Bowler was a clear winner of the Major with a score of 5/6, with Evie Hollingworth 2nd and

Miles Edwards-Wright 3rd on a tie break. Although there were no players from Hull in the Major we were encouraged with the performance of Hull player Thomas Bertolotti , who in winning the Intermediate on a tie break with a score of 5/6 did really well considering he was out graded by several other youngsters.  In winning this tournament Thomas also retained his title of Hull Champion. The runners up spot in this section went to Wesley McGough and third was Cameron Blair. An encouraging aspect of the tournament was that the Novice section was well supported, which offers hope for the future of our game.  This section was won by Faris Mallick with a perfect score of 7/7 with Robina Murray 2nd  and Sailesh Sitaram 3rd . There was also some encouragement to be had for Hull here in that Andrew Hart did well to score 5/7 and win the best under 14 medal.  Also Song Lin Xue from
Hull  did well for a very first tournament to score 4.5/7. It just remains for me to say thanks to all the parents for bringing the children, to thank the children for taking part and a big thank you to The Yorkshire Junior Chess Association providing the expertise in controlling everything.  Last but by no means least a big thank you to the Ross Legacy without which
Hull might struggle to hold such events.
