Local Clubs

Here is list of local clubs who belong to the Hull and District Chess Association, and/or the Humber Chess League. Please email secretary@hullchess.com for further details or to update information.

Barton Chess Club (affiliated to Humber Chess League)

Meets: Thursdays, 7:30-11:00 pm at the Barton Corn Exchange, Market Place, Barton upon Humber, North Lincolnshire.

Directions: Market Place is part of the A1077. Those approaching from the A15 Humber Bridge to Lincoln road should take the A1077 into Barton, then turn right at a roundabout into Holydyke. Market Place is further down, and the venue will be on the left. Buses serving Market Place include the 350

Beverley Chess Club (affiliated to Hull & District Chess Association, and Humber Chess League)

Meets: Wednesdays, 6:45-11:00 pm at St Nicholas Community Centre, Holme Church Lane, Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Directions: Holme Church Lane meets the A1174 – which meets the A1079 outside Kingston upon Hull and the A164 north of Beverley – at a five-way roundabout, south of the A1035 Bishop Burton to Leven road. At the roundabout, take the first exit after the one for Hull, and the venue will be on the left. Bus service 521 serves the venue, and services 121-122 and 246 stop near the roundabout. Beverley is also served by rail; those arriving from the direction of Hull should cross the level crossing next to the station, take first left, turn right into Beaver Road, then left into Holme Church Lane; the venue will be on the right. Street Parking. 

The playing room is located upstairs.

Bridlington Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association)

Meets: Thursdays, 6-11pm, at Toc H Building, The Old Rockett House, West Street, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Directions: West Street is a side road of South Cliff Road. Continuations of South Cliff Road include Kingston Road, which meets the A165 in the south of Bridlington, and in the other direction Bessingby Road (A165), which meets the A614/A165 near Bridlington & District Hospital. Those approaching from the A614 (Turn right onto Bessingby Road) or the railway station will see a ship-shaped building on the right; take the road running along its left (West Street) and the venue will be on the right at the top of a staircase. Buses serving Bridlington include 121 (which serves Bessingby Road and Hilderthorpe Road), 100 and most buses numbered 500-517. Those arriving by rail should leave the station car park by the far right-hand corner, turn right onto the road serving Tesco, then turn left onto the main road (Hilderthorpe Road); this leads to South Cliff Road. 

The venue is situated between Royal York Yacht Club and Technical Institute.

Hull Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association)

Meets: Wednesdays and Fridays, 7:00 - 10:15pm at Carnegie Heritage Centre (Formerly Carnegie Library), Anlaby Road, Hull.

Directions: The Carnegie Heritage Centre is based on Anlaby Road near Walton Street. Free parking is available within West Park and can be accessed via the Walton Street entrance entrance near the Gemtec Arena. Alternatively, Stagecoach and East Yorkshire buses run regularly regular down Anlaby Road (ask for the West Park stop). 

St Andrews Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association, Humber Chess League)

Meets: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:00-10:30 pm, at Marist Social Club, Hull Grammar School, 119 Cottingham Road, Hull.

Directions: Hull Grammar School lies near the traffic light junction between Cottingham Road (Inner Ring Road) and Cranbrook Avenue. Those approaching from Beverley on the A1079 should turn right onto Cottingham Road, and will see the venue on the left. Buses stopping near the venue include 15/115, 53 and 105. 

The club is behind Marist Church. Entry is via the passage way behind the church.

Victoria Dock Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association)

Meets: Tuesdays, 7-10:00 pm, at Victoria Dock Village Hall, Southbridge Road, Victoria Dock, Hull.

Directions: Victoria Dock lies next to the A63/A1033 corridor, east of the roundabout junction with Ferensway (A1079). Those approaching from that junction should, after crossing a bridge, turn first right into Plimsoll Way, then left onto Southbridge Road; the venue will then be on the left. Bus services 9, 23/24 and 90 serve the venue; 77 serves Hedon Road (A1033); and 78-80 serve Garrison Road (A63) and Hedon Road. 

N.B. All matches must start at 7pm because the venue must be located by 10pm. All clocks will be started in the absence of one or both players.

Walkington Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association)

Meets: Wednesdays, 7:15-10:15 pm, at Walkington Village Hall, East End, Walkington, East Yorkshire

Directions: Walkington lies on the B1230 Beverley to Howden road, and is signposted from both the A1079/A1035 junction and the A164. Those approaching from Beverley, the A1079 or the A164 will see the venue on the right. Buses serving Walkington include 143 and 180. Excellent car parking facilities.

Willows Chess Club (affiliated to Hull & District Chess Association, and Humber Chess League)

Meets: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 7:15-11:00 pm, at Willows Sport and Recreation Club, 695 Holderness Road, Hull.

Directions: Holderness Road is part of the A165. Those approaching from the city centre will see the venue on the left between the Woodford Leisure Centre and Ings Road (Outer Ring Road),located just before the Tower Grange Police Station. Buses serving the venue include 42, 50-51, 240, 277 and most buses numbered 54-58.

Excellent car parking facilities on entering club, licensed bar- immediately on the right before the concert room. The club are always happy to accept new members irrespective of grade.

Withernsea Chess Club (affiliated to Hull and District Chess Association)

Meets: Fridays, 7:15-11:00 pm, at British Legion Club, 303 Queen Street, Withernsea, East Yorkshire

Directions: Queen Street is part of the A1033 Hull to Withernsea road. Those approaching from Hull will, after passing over a rise, see the venue on the right near a zebra crossing. Buses serving the venue include 71 and 75-77.

Club is to the south end of the town near pedestrian crossing. Parking is in nearby streets. Bar facilities at discretion of British Legion Club on separate floor.
