Charlie Storey, the
host, what a guy! Friendly, with a
wicked sense of humour. To me, he brought the whole afternoon alive. I
believe
everybody who was there that afternoon would come away feeling that the
event
was highly successful.
Yes,
he miscalculated the time he would take going around 30 tables and
maybe he was
a little over generous regarding his fee, but we must not let this be a
distraction from the overall enjoyment of the afternoon’s
entertainment.
Overhaul to me he was worth every penny.

I think
the day went
really well especially as Charlie
did` nt have a big ego even though he was the strongest player in the
room. He was sporting in defeat even though he only lost to people on
the clock and in the end that led to an enjoyable day for everyone
which is what the game should be about.

just
a few words about the simul at the kc last sunday.although i felt that
cs was
always going to struggle with time,it was an opportunity to play
against a
strong player at a nice venue for free.and i enjoyed my draw against
him.

I
certainly felt it worth doing.
I enjoyed the day all round and would hope for the chance of something
like
this again. How many times do you get to play A FIDE Master at
any form
of chess! The only drawbacks would be the fact that it should
have been a
standardplay game, where Charlie had white on all boards and the time
control
the same for everyone. The other thing is, I don't want it to
sound like
'sour grapes' but if Charlie was insistent on giving away his playing
fee it
would have been fairer to split the £100 on all those who won on
time.
That's just my all round impression.

Venue-good-plenty
of free parking.Set up-good-the names on each board good idea+ the
little
exhibition at the side was a good idea.Clock simul was good-its far
more
sociable than a normal simul because you can get up and have a chat. C
Storey
was very good and sociable he just took on too many players in the time
allowed. Certainly i would like to play
in any future simul.

The
simultaneous at the KC was brilliant and I speak for the 30 who took
part and
all concerned. I myself would have given back the £100 in
question if I had
won. Charlie`s day started at
o'clock in the morning travelling down from
Newcastle, then playing 30 people against the clock and travelling
back, a good
16 hours from start to finish, not only that, he gave pleasure to 30
people who
played him !

Having
attended the said simul I can say it was an excellent event. Before the
match
started there was some debate on how the prize money should be paid to
the
first winner etc and CS mentioned how he thought it might work out.
What no one
has mentioned is that CS stated he had not lost (as I recall) in about
20
years. I understand he played more games than he normally does and this
obviously gave him less chance to concentrate on individual games.
Therefore
less likely to win the prize. It’s a bit like juggling; you can only
juggle so
many before you lose the lot!

I
thought it was really
good. I'm not sure Charlie's decision to play on the clocks was so
good, but it
wasn't a waste of time. It's not often you gat a chance to play
against a
titled player and for those that took part it was an opportunity.
In hindsight
we could have made a small charge (£3 would have done) but it's
easy to say
after the event.

yes,
I enjoyed the event very much. As is the case whenever one sees a
professional
at sport, their performance seems to be so far superior to one's own
efforts as
to give the impression that they are doing a different activity
entirely. The
use of clocks was a mistake, although it did led to some amusing
situations. As
for my game, I played badly, quickly blundered into a losing, but still
playable, endgame. Because it required many moves to bring home the
win--which
was certainly there--the element of time proved decisive, and resulted
in an
undeserved win on the clock for myself.

for an enjoyable afternoon. I think the `sniper` was a little ambitious
using
clocks for so many players. . . . `Back to the drawing board` - BAZ

I would
like to make the following
comments alongside the general point that the event was a bit of a
pilot , eg
the first of its kind so we all need to accept that we will learn
a few things from the day. That said
· The venue
was great
· Charlie
showed a fresh approach as he
was very prepared to engage with everyone.
· The end
results to me proved that
there was a problem with the rules for the day (mainly due to
time ,
possibly some to order of play, eg. too much missing out on certain
games). and
this was clear both from reflection and from about 1 hour to go before
the end
of play.
· At the end
of the day it was a bit of
fun and very enjoyable, and that had a lot to do with Charlies attitude.
· I thought
Charlie worked extremely
hard and was very deserving of his appearance fee.
· The idea of
a simultaneous around a
single opening was also an interesting concept.
· Overall
enjoyed the day and with a few
tweaks to the rules events on similar lines would be welcomed.
· At the end
of the day Charlie was
prepared to have a go and perhaps a few other stronger players more
locally
could look to do the same, thanks to everyone who organised the event
and to
Charlie
I
even thought Charlie took such a heavy defeat very well compared to
most
players I know.

The
simultaneous was definitely worth it. (However, I wish Charlie had kept
on
playing instead of just allowing his last 30 minutes to run down on the
clock
without making a move because I was the exchange up on him and thought
I had a good chance to win over the board!) We need events
such as this to galvanise the Association and to draw attention to
chess in the
city, from within and without. The membership of the Association is
declining
year on year, and we need to try everything we can to reverse the
trend. Thanks
for all your efforts in staging this event. Playing in it was the easy
bit.

I thought the venue
was ideal. Charlie
was not what I thought a chess master would be like ( but that was a
good
thing), I was sorry that there weren't more of our area's 'big guns'
there to
take him on. And what can you say about Mike Butt - a hero, Thank you
VERY much
for inviting me, long may these sort of events continue, Cheers.

The
simil was fun, and a great
afternoon's entertainment. I think Charlie bit off slightly more than
he could
chew! However, my only quibble (and I hope it doesn't show) is that
perhaps
clocks were unnecessary. More of same please!
